June 24, 2012 — Catered Birthday Party in McLean, VA

Thanks for doing a fabulous job last night. I’ve heard so many raves about the food, the service was terrific and my kitchen was spotless. The wines were perfect. It could not have gone better. There were a few pieces of napoleon in the kitchen when you left, but they were gone well before we finished our own clean up. That was the best custard ever. I guess all the grilled fruit went, too. We had about 6 cancellations, so I was afraid we’d we wallowing in leftovers, but enough showed up who didn’t respond or notified me at the last minute that it balanced out and the amount worked out just right. We were thrilled. We will see you again at the restaurant.

The Open Kitchen learning experience on May 9 at the University of Maryland in College Park was a resounding cultural success with our employees!  Owner Hue-Chan Karels and teaching chef Tony Do provided us with a unique presentation about the ingredients and health benefits of Vietnamese cuisine then demonstrated how to prepare four delicious Vietnamese dishes.  By the time we got to the tasting part of the program, we were primed for a new culinary delight – and Hue-Chan and Tony delivered!

November 30, 2021 - Thanksgiving Dinner

I commend Open Kitchen on the dinner- we were actually quite amazed with how everything reheated- even the green beans remained crunchy and fresh. Everything was delicious. We would love to know where/who provides the corn meal for the polenta- I’ve had it twice now and it is so good.

The portions were big enough to feed two adults and two little kids and still have some leftovers as well.

Although the pick-up seemed a little disorganized and the order wasn’t quite ready to go when Holly requested we arrive, I enjoyed meeting other Open Kitchen guests and a glass of wine while waiting. It was no big deal, but had my schedule been tighter it probably would have been an issue.

We would definitely do it again and have recommended the idea to our friends.

We really like Open Kitchen- we’ve come for dinner several times and participated in the classes. It really is a gem for the Falls Church/McLean area- particularly since to have the same style food and half the ambiance we would have to face the hassle of Tyson’s corner traffic.

Thanks for opening your kitchen so we could close ours on Thanksgiving!

I had a great time, and more importantly, so did my wife! Please let everyone at Open Kitchen know how much fun we had. I will be trying out some of the recipes soon. I have heard nothing but glowing reviews from the guests as well. Thanks again, everyone really enjoyed it. At least until the next morning when we had to go to work…

October 23, 2021 — Family Birthday Cooking Party

Hi Hue-Chan,

The family birthday cooking event was a big hit, thanks so much for everything you and the team did to help make it a success!

We had a blast with Jackson, he was incredibly informative and fun. It was a treat getting to talk with the Executive Chef and everything was so very well organized with the full team being incredibly attentive to our needs. I especially liked that there was a little treat for us at the beginning, then we had a chance to take a break and eat the soup before heading back to make the main course. The pace of the class was perfect and the 3 hours went by quickly. I have gotten rave reviews from both my parents and my in-laws.

I will have to find a reason to come back soon, whether it be for a meal or for another cooking class. Thanks again!

August 9, 2021 — German Wine Society Wine Pairing Dinner

I recently arranged a wine tasting and food pairing dinner for 32 people of the German Wine Society at Open Kitchen Restaurant in Falls Church.

We began our dinner arrangements by selecting six wine that were representative of the wines we wanted to have at the dinner. We then met with Chef Kenneth Hughes and Hue-Chan Karels to taste these wines and discuss the types of foods that would go well with them. We had an excellent meeting and left the wines with Chef Ken for him to make a final menu recommendation.

Chef Ken put together a wonderful three-course menu for the wines.
The main course was a perfectly prepared grilled pork chop with onions & cracked mustard, Yukon potato & summer vegetable melange paired with two more reislings from the Mosel. This was one of the best pork chops I have ever had the pleasure to taste.

The dessert course featured Virginia peach, apple & cherry crisp with locally made Moorenko vanilla bean ice cream and two more rieslings. The sweetness of the crisp was perfectly calibrated to go with two wines. Speaking from my own experience, I find that most chefs miss the mark on this.

It was a pleasure working with Chef Ken and Hue-Chan to make this dinner happen. Hue-Chan was very accomodating and helpful in addressing any concerns that we had and worked very hard to make sure that our guests had the very best experience possible. We all had a fabulous meal at Open Kitchen and we look forward to being able to arrange another event there in the future.

August 7, 2021 — Girl Scout Gold Award Project:  Baking from the Heart

Dear Hue-Chan,

The baking event went pretty well, I think.  Your staff was very helpful.  Holly (your Holly, that is!) was always available, but never intrusive.  Holly (my Holly) felt pretty comfortable in the kitchen… I just sat around & talked, really.  The prep & the baking went off w/out any hitch, as far as I can tell & we shipped off many boxes of goodies to various people’s friends & family members.  Holly (my Holly!) has a web site to put together & some paperwork to do & then she will be done w/ her Gold Award — just in time to apply for college. I do want to thank you for being so kind in helping Holly w/ her project.

June 26, 2011- Surprise Birthday Cooking Party

Open Kitchen was the ideal spot for my wife’s surprise birthday party. The team made a great event that was seamless for both adults and their kids, with hands-on cooking for all. They were very open to my ideas and vision, and pulled together a custom menu and wine list based on focused discussions and tastings. Food places can often be pretentious, and feel condescending — this was the opposite, with enthusiastic staff eager to share their craft and learn from their customers. I even shared a grilled fennel trick, and the chef made it with me on the spot.

The best food is a celebration, and leverages simple, incredibly fresh ingredients and care for detail. If you’re looking for somewhere warm and flexible to have a memorable event, I can’t recommend Open Kitchen highly enough.

June 5, 2011- Surprise Graduation Cooking Party!

Hi Hue-Chan!

The event was fantastic!  Everyone had a great time and learned a lot too! Jackson was a great instructor and came up with a good combination of demonstration and hands-on cooking.  We had a mix of people who love to cook as well as a number of people who were there to just socialize, so the format worked well and fit everyone’s needs. John loved the lobster frittata, so I appreciate your flexibility with the menu! It was also really nice to have the whole restaurant to ourselves- it made it really feel like our event.  Several of our friends have already talked about returning to Open Kitchen for dinner and other cooking classes!

Thanks for sharing the pictures and for all of your help coordinating the menu and event.  We will definitely be back!

December 11, 2021 – Synaptitude Consulting Holiday Cooking Party for Staff & their Significant Others

I worked with Open Kitchen to plan a holiday event for my company, Synaptitude Consulting, an elite management consulting firm that provides business and technology consulting to clients who want to transform and improve their operations. From the idea stage to detailed planning to the event itself, everything was wonderful! Hue-Chan and her team came up with fantastic ideas for an Iron Chef competition, and were flexible in the set-up as we worked together to accommodate our group’s ideas, goals, and food restrictions. During the event it was clear that they’d thought of everything to make it a seamless, fun, and interesting experience for the whole team. Our Iron Chef competition was full of fun, laughter, learning about food safety and cooking skills, and above all, delicious food that we’d made ourselves! May 30, 2021 - 100th Birthday Party - Off-site Catering


As I was planning for my mother’s 100th birthday party, I had determined that I would prepare the food myself.  As the guest list grew to 100+, I knew that I needed help.  Several people had told me that Open Kitchen provided catering so I went there with the intention that they would make the food, but I would still do everything else.  Once I began talking to Chef Bernard, I felt an instant sense of calm and knew that I had to hire him to cater the party.  It was the best decision that I could have made.

Chef Bernard recommended many excellent solutions for cutting costs and making it a successful afternoon event.  He picked out a delicious menu of finger foods, recommended a smaller cake and a canapé assortment, and arranged for the tent rental.  Everything was taken care of with the highest level of professionalism.  The day of the party he took over and he and his two wait staff provided excellent service to our guests.  Everyone loved the food and I received many calls and emails after the event praising the party.  Best of all, I was able to relax and let Chef Bernard deal with the littlest details and my mother had a perfect party.  I would highly recommend Open Kitchen and the services of Chef Bernard and his staff to help make your event a big success.

Lots of fun was had by all.  Following the event I received nothing but positive praise for bringing the team together to cook.  The tasks required interdependency from team members.  Keep in mind that we are all in charge of our individual buildings.  We never had to produce on the spot like that before. The team came together in a way that only cooking and eating could accomplish.

March 26, 2021 - Birthday Celebration Cooking Demonstration

Thank you for making my birthday so special! We really appreciated the festive memories created by Chef B and all those at Open Kitchen. All of us, birthday boy down through the grandsons, were held in rapt attention by the culinary story unfolding before us. We enjoyed the meal immensely while learning about how to cook it from a master; he really does make it look easy. I would happily recommend this to anyone looking to have a special event that you will talk about for some time to come.

February 24, 2021 Chandeleur at Open Kitchen

I brought my French class to Open Kitchen to celebrate Chandeleur – a French celebration day when we make  crêpes in France -. Chef Bernard made the class very interactive.  Each student was able to make their own crepes at cooking stations set up along the Chef’s Counter.  He also taught some of the cooking class in French, which was wonderful.  Everyone enjoyed a French-style Shepherd’s Pie and salad for lunch, then ate the crepes for dessert. The students, and teachers, had a great time! The students are still talking about this field trip and wish their parents could take them again to Open Kitchen!

February 21, 2021 Birthday Cooking Demonstration Celebration



I wanted to take the opportunity to thank you and Open Kitchen’s staff for making my husband’s birthday a wonderful success!  Chef Matt’s wit, knowledge of food, and good humor made for a great demonstration!  The staff was attentive and even took over the camera so that everyone could be in the pictures!

Open Kitchen is certainly a Gem!  I would recommend Open Kitchen to any of my friends and neighbors who are looking for an unique venue to host a birthday party or other event.  Open Kitchen allows you to entertain without cooking, cleaning, or even planning!  Open Kitchen allows you to come in, enjoy your guest, and have a wonderful experience..who doesn’t want that???

Dear Hue- Chan,

This is just a note to thank for you for a fun and rewarding experience on the occasion of my daughter Kiran’s 11th Birthday.  Kiran and all her guest’s had a great time at her Birthday Cooking Party at Open-Kitchen.  The party was well executed with an interactive demonstration, fun facts with the result being a truly scrumptious feast.  It was a great space for the party as well and we loved the artful display of aprons on the chairs. The restaurant itself is a treasure.  As an architect, I truly appreciate the very detailed, integrated artwork throughout the space, with fine appointments, utensils and equipment.  I got a genuine sense of commitment from all of the staff, who were very sincere, warm and helpful. We certainly will be back again to experience other culinary opportunities at Open-Kitchen.

The Beyond Flowers and Chocolate Cooking Demo was great fun!.  We really enjoyed the fact that a group of total strangers could have a great time centered on good food, wine and interesting conversations. It is a real treat for me to attend demo style classes as I teach cooking classes myself!(Suzanne)  Loved the Hors d’ oeuvres and have already prepared several of Chef Bernard’s recipes from the postings at your web-site.  Chef Bernard shows tricks of the trade that even a novice cook can accomplish.  Again, great fun!
